Abstract: The present work seeks to perform a comparative study between Casanova's Return to Venice, by Arthur Schnitzler, published in 1918, and Lorde, by João Gilberto Noll, published in 2004. On both novels we are presented to leading characters that, at old age, go through the type of critical moments peculiar to subjects who say goodbye to youth. It is our interest to analyze the relationship, stablished within the oeuvres, between the manners in which the matter of old age is thematized inside the fictional sphere and in discourses committed to the empirical reality. Thus, part of our discussion will focus on the shared region of these two discursive spheres. In addition to the plot and historical moment of their writing, our reading will also focus on the relationship between the empirical authors and the discussed works, coming up with conjectures about the presence of the authorial self in both texts. When focusing on the literary texts, the relationship between the development of the leading characters' personalities and the fictional space will be of particular interest, considering above all else the characters' perceptions on the surroundings when they are away from their homeland. Keywords: Lorde, João Gilberto Noll, Casanova's Return to Venice, Arthur Schnitzler, Old Age, Fictional Space.
