Abstract: More than the aging process of the body, aging is defined by the boundaries of social behavior in different stages of life. This research aims to analyze the embodiment in the old age, specifically the one lived in asylums. The two asylums ethnographed are charity institutions that house only women of low social classes and with varying degrees of physical and mental dependence. The identification of these homes as total institutions, although relative to these levels of dependency relates how the institutionalized elderly live their corporeality. In this cut, defined by the intersection of old age /asylum/embodiment, I propose , through the ethnography of bodily practices and narratives of the elderly residents themselves, to analyze how the old age experienced in a specific context operates in the construction of subjects and the ways to constitute themselves in these environments.
