Abstract: The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of urinary tract infections and presence of Actinomyces suis in the urine of 1745 pregnant sows in southern Brazil. The sows were from pig farms that raised the animals in confinement and with histories of chronic reproductive problems, and from farms which raised the pigs outdoors and without histories of reproductive problems. The presence of A. suis was determined by indirect immunofluorescence. Urinary infection was considered present when the urine sample contained either nitrites or blood. Additionally, to determine their significance for the pr-esumptive diagnosis of urinary infections in sows, the color, odor, turbidity, density, pH, and the presence of protein and crystals in the urine were determined. Urinary infections were present in 29.54% of the sows raised in confinement and 16.46% of the sows raised outdoors. The overall prevalence of urinary infections was 28.31%. For the presence of A. suis, 22.24% of the sows raised in confinement and 6.71% of the sows raised outdoors had the bacteria in their urines. The prevalence of A. suis in all sows was 20.63%. Negative correlation was demonstrated between the presence of urinary infections and the presence of A. suis. In other words, sows which had urinary infections had lesser numbers of A. suis (13.67%) in the urine than those sows without urinary infections (23.12%). In the same way, urine samples positive for A. suis had lesser number of urinary infections (17.43%) than those negative for the bacteria (28.62%). Only 3.60% of the sows had urinary infection and A. suis simultaneously in the urine. It was concluded that sows can harbor A. suis in their urinary tracts without showing signs of urinary infections or that this bacteria competes with microorganisms eventually capable of causing urinary tract infections in sows. On the other hand, there was strong correlation between the presence of A. suis and hematuria. That is, 75.00% of the sows showing hematuria were positive for the presence of the bacteria. The same was true for the presence of nitrites and blood in the urine. Since A. suis, usually present with the blood does not transform nitrates in nitrites, it led us to believe that urinary tract infections when caused by A. suis have additional bacteria involved. The turbidity frequently observed in sow's urine (83.15% ) is due to the presence of crystals, present in 96.18 % of the turbid samples. Finally, color, turbidity, density, pH and presence of crystals were considered of no value for the presumptive diagnosis of urinary tract infections in the sowpt_BR
