Abstract: This thesis analyses the discourses, practices and representations of the Catholic Church through the Social Doctrine of the Church and the Pastoral Commission of the Land, and the existing relationship with the Landless Rural Workers' Movement - MST. The objective is to identify and analyze how the Church, by means of the Brazilian Bishops Conference (CNBB), represents the agrarian question. It is as an attempt to understand the representations of Social Movement and the Church in the Pastoral Commission of the Land and the Landless Rural Workers' Movement in the decades of 1980 and 1990. It also analyses the discourse of the Church in relation to the agrarian question, mainly from the Church's Social Doctrine, and investigate the history of the Pastoral Commission of the Land and the Landless Rural Workers' Movement, their political and religious discourses. In addition, this study discusses the forms of the symbolic power manifestations in discourses, mainly on the issue of memory, the use of the past and mystique. Thus, in this study, it was used as source, the documents produced for the formation of peasant leadership. The methodology was based on the concepts of social representation developed by Roger Chartier, symbolic power by Pierre Bourdieu and the elements of Discourse Analysis, linked to the prospect of French chain, giving priority to the institutional discourse. It is understood that the agrarian question was comprehended by Catholic Church, until the mid 1950, as something marginal, but it became part of the institutional discourse in the following decades. The Church has been involved in agrarian question in Brazil in such way that the Brazilian Bishops Conference has created the Pastoral Commission of the Land (CPT). It is understandable that the work of this Pastoral Commission contributed to the creation of the Landless Rural Workers' Movement. The Catholic Church performed in a discursive way, but it also contributed to the peasant?s practical organization. It was noticed that the symbolic elements played a crucial role in the organization of landless peasants struggling for land and the struggle was not entirely political, but it was also permeated by religious elements.pt_BR
