Abstract: This study aimed to verify the influence of different N sources on erva-mate (IIex par guariensis St.Hil) seedlings grown in greenhouse in terms of: a) changes in the chemical characteristic of bulk and rhizosphere soil; b) biomass productio9; c) chemical composition of the shoots; and d) changes in net photosynthesis. Three experiments were set up in sequence. Seedlings in all treatments, in all three experiments, received a base fertilization of 60 mg P205.kg-1soil plus 40 mg K20.kg-1 soil. The nitrogen treatments received 120 mg N.kg-1 soil. The soil used in the first two experiments was an Inceptisol and an Oxisol was used in the last experiment. In the first experiment N-NH4 and N-N03 sources were compared between them and with a control (O) with no applied N. All seedlings received also a nutrient solution containing all the macronutrients but N for the control treatment. Seedlings grew for 60 days in glasshouse. Bulk and rhizosphere soil were separated manually shaking the root system. The biomass was separated in roots (R), stem (S), new (NL), and old leaves (OL). Seedlings grown under N treatments had a higher biomass weight compared to C, mainly the NL. There was no difference in pH (CaCI2) between bulk and rhizosphere soil although the N-NH4 source showed higher concentration of H+Al and H in relation to O. In the second experiment an urea treatment was added and' the time span of the observations was reduced from 60 to 25 days, including an intermediate evaluation on the 10th day. The nutrient solution used in the first experiment, was substituted by (NH4)2S04 and Ca(N03)2 and urea as N sources. Different forms of N did not affect the biomass production. There was an increase in Ca in leaves from N-N03 treatment and a decrease in Fe levels in the leaves from N treatments. There was an initial increase in pH (CaCl2) in the urea treatment at the 10th day and a drop in the 25th day reaching values similar to O. There was a difference between bulk and rhizosphere soil on the concentration of Mg2, Na, and Sum of Bases (S). In the third experiment the soil type was changed for a sandier one maintaining the N treatments of the second experiment and including an evaluation of net photosynthesis (Pn). The biomass production was higher in N-NH4 and Urea treatments compared to O and N-N03. N content was higher in N treatments while Ca content was higher in N-N03 plants than in the other treatments. The N-NH4 source showed a higher content of P and Mg in the shoots than O and NNO 3 and a higher content of K as compared with O. There was a decrease in rhizosphere pH at the N-NH4 treatment and Urea behaved in the same manner as in the second experiment. There was also an increase in H+Al and Al3 content in the rhizosphere in plants that receives the N-NH4 source. Plants nourished with N-NH4 had higher rates of Pn and presented an increase in the number of leaves. It was concluded that: 1) soil type affected the response of erva-mate to different N sources, in terms of biomass production; 2) increasing N content in leaves alone was not able to promote gain in biomass production of erva-mate seedlings; 3) seedlings receiving N-NH4 showed a tendency to acidify the rhizosphere soil in both soils, although it was more evident on Oxisol ; 4) erva-mate seedlings accumulates Na in the rhizosphere soil and its interaction with K should be investigated; and 5) the increase in leaf area and net photosynthesis observed at the N-NH4 treatment was coincident with an increasing absorption of K, Mg, Fe, and Mn in the Oxisol.
