| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | Abstract: The main purpose of this dissertation is to check if Brazilian learners of English can identify and produce different intonation patterns in declarative sentences and non-inverted questions. The participants took a perception test in which they listened to sentences produced by a native speaker and chose between two tones: rise (non-inverted questions) and fall (declaratives). This was followed by a production test, in which participants read sentences from cards. The results showed that these students could distinguish between pitch contours used in statements and in non-inverted questions, and that they were able to produce the first pattern correctly. However, when producing non-inverted questions they showed a strong tendency to use the intonation contour which would be appropriate if there was a following tag question, but which does not allow a declarative sentence on its own to be heard as a question. | pt_BR |
