Abstract: The present study deals with an analysis of a tense system based on the definition of tense and aspect, provided by William Bull and John Lyons for the English language, and Eurico Back and Geraldo Mattos for Portuguese. Besides, the identification of the function of some verbal forms, the simple past and present perfect in English, and the 'pretérito perfeito1 in Portuguese was a further objective, aimed at verifying the situations in which they are applied. A selection of examples was made, the choice being limited to those occurrences of the three verbal forms referred to above. After the theoretical presentation this set of examples was used to illustrate the function of each verbal form, as well as the correspondence and divergence there are of each form use in English relative to the use of the 'pretérito perfeito' in Portuguese. The relevance of the adverbial expression to indicate time in the data collected was also analysed. This investigation is thought to have been worthwhile because it revealed characteristics of the verbal forms which may be used for the teaching of English.
