Abstract: The Amazonian rivers have a common characteristic, which is the high quantity of woody material they transport, especially in flooding periods. The presence of logs is important for the ecosystem, but can also cause some problems. We highlight the possible difficulties in power generation when the accumulation occurs near a hydroelectric power plant. HPP Jirau is located on the Madeira River and this problem will be approached in this work. Studies involving the modeling of river log transport are still few and in the complexity of the Madeira River and HPP Jirau there are none. This work aims to simulate the hydrodynamics of the river and represent the woody material through the Lagrangian particle model. Delft3D will be used to perform the study and the particle simulation is coupled to the hydrodynamic results. Some scenarios of plant operation were simulated and retainer structures (log booms and half-water retainers) were inserted to analyze the behavior of the particles. The hydrodynamic model was validated from previous studies, field measurements, and a reduced physical model. It was possible to represent the main variations of three-dimensional velocities and water levels. The particle simulation was consistent with the flow distribution and thus it was possible to identify, according to the power plant operation, the most attractive destinations for the logs.
