Abstract
Abstract: Benthic organisms are widely used in detection of anthropic impacts in estuarine systems due to their sessile behavior and long life cycle. To understand the structure, the dynamics and the ecological processes that operate on benthic fauna, it is essential to identify the spatial and temporal scales of variability in which communities are distributed. For that, hierarchical sampling models have been used to distinguish changes produced by human activities from natural sources of variability of the system. This work presents two chapters that apply linear models in different degrees of complexity. From the identification of spatial scales (Chapter 1), we investigated the temporal scales and space-time interaction (Chapter 2) on the variability of the macrofauna and its relationship with the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments. The results evidenced the influence of contamination by urban sewage in community structure, with the predominance of indicator species in the Contaminated site, although a significant variability was also observed in the Tidal Flat scale, generated by structural differences and physical-chemical characteristics, such as the degree of organic input. The Periods has shown differences in abundance and number of species, with lower values during the Rainy Period, which may reflect a higher desiccation level and storm incidence on tidal flats during the summer months. However, the temporal variability was higher in small scales (Fortnights), and in the residual scale (100 m).
