Abstract
Abstract: The production of zeolites from mineral coal ash for use in wastewater treatment has been the subject of several studies in a lot of places around the world. Some of these studies were about the ashes from the thermoelectric plant at Figueira-PR, which was able to adsorb heavy metals and H+ ions. However, there are difficulties in industrial use of these material. Their small size prevents its application in fixed bed and moving bed as other systems are considered unsuitable for users due to operating cost. Another line of research is the aggregation of industrial wastes in ceramics. This study aims to bring together these lines of research, studying ceramics produced with a clay and zeolite and evaluating their potential to adsorb cations. The benefit of this process is the possibility of producing ceramics with size suitable for use in a fixed bed. Ceramics prepared with same pro ortions of clay and zeolite, and calcined at temperatures of 650ºC , 850ºC, 950ºC, 1050ºC and 1150ºC and then milled. For behavior comparison, pure clay ceramics were prepared at the same temperatures. For all the ceramics produced and zeolite without calcination were determined the curves of adsorption of H+ from solutions with pH between 2.0 and 4.2. The results showed that the ceramic of clay and zeolite carried some of the adsorption capacity of cations, mainly ceramics calcined at 650ºC. A test for the adsorption of metal ions with cadmium, zinc and arsenic was performed to prove the result for H+. The experimental data were evaluated using three models of adsorption isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Kagame-Radushkevick with each material. These results showed a better fit for one or two of these models. None of the models of adsorption isotherms was capable of representing all the materials of this study. Through analysis of surface area determination by nitrogen adsorption and evaluating the morphology of materials by scanning electron microscopy, it was found that none of these parameters justifies the behavior of ceramics and therefore further studies of the material structure are necessary to justify the data obtained. The goal of obtaining a ceramic with the cation adsorption capacity was reached, but further research is needed to optimize the material.
