Abstract
Considering the great importance of riparian ecosystems and the need for comprehensive studies involving such characteristics as morpho-anatomic, ecophysiological, nutrition and growth of native tree species, the general aim of this thesis was to expand knowledge about the adaptive mechanisms of aroeira-vermelha (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi) through the study of several physiological aspects, seeking a better understanding of the strategies developed by this species. Thus, coming to contribute with some data that could help the projects of restoration of riparian forests in relation to the behavior of this species in areas where the occurrence of variations in the water status of soils is common. To do so, these studies were conducted in riparian and in protected environments., The behavior of aroeiravermelha in relation to ecophysiological and nutritional aspects was characterized in the area of riparian revegetation under recovery process, located in Curitiba's metropolitan area around Iraí Dam. The nutrient contents of leaf species in the study were satisfactory. We described the physical and chemical characteristics in the surface layers of soil. After two years of implantation, the comparison with initial soil analysis showed positive changes with regard to soil fertility. The results revealed the influence of seasonality on the ecophysiological behavior with differences related to photons flux density. In protected environment, characteristics were evaluated for leaf morphoanatomy, gas exchange, chlorophyll content and growth of seedlings of aroeira vermelha submitted to different levels of water saturation. This experiment was conducted at Embrapa Forest vivarium in Colombo-PR, Brazil. The seedlings of aroeira-vermelha were grown in plastic tubets. When they were four months age, they were submitted to the following treatment: T1-control (daily irrigated plants), T2-partial flooding (plants flooded until the girth) and T3- total flooding (submerged plants). The gas exchange in flooding aroeira-vermelha indicated a high degree of stomatal limitation of photosynthesis. It was found that aroeira vermelha seedlings subjected to partial flooding can survive for a twice higher period when submerged. Seedling growth was also affected by the level and duration of flooding, which caused the altering of morphological parameters, the relations between them and the index used. Seedlings subjected to a greater degree of flooding showed the lowest values for the morphological characteristics and performance evaluation. The seedlings of aroeira-vermelha developed adaptive phenotypic changes in two levels of water saturation assessed. We observed an increase in thickness of the base of the stem, leaf chlorosis and abscission, the appearance of lenticels and adventitious roots. The seedlings of this species were more tolerant to flooding than to partial flooding in the total period of ten weeks. For the morphological parameters evaluated after three weeks of flooding, there were no major changes in the morphology of the leaves, mainly to leaf area and AEF. In T3, the water content was higher and leaf thickness was lower. There was no difference between treatments for stomatal density. Regarding anatomic aspects, there was a reduction in the thickness of the mesophyll and vein, as well as production and phenolic compounds by some cell types. The intercellular spaces are progressively larger in plants subjected to flooding. Finally, evaluating the adaptive mechanisms of aroeira-vermelha, it was concluded that the species has a great potential for use in restoration of riparian areas, according to the phenotypic plasticity displayed. It was demonstrated the importance of comprehensive studies on the responses of native species, seeking an integrated strategy in terms of occupation and survival in different environments.
