Abstract
Abstract: This research has the objective to understand how the imaginary of Belle Époque was apprehended by Brazilian press, with the focus in the city of Piracicaba. Using the Jornal de Piracicaba, we try to analyze how the modernization process was represented in the city between the years of 1900 to 1914 and how the visions about those processes affected the discourses and the constructions of urban leisure time. In the eager for a modernization that means a new way of living and sees the world, the leisure was important. A number of reports appointed that they didn’t wanted just structural changes in the city but also new ways of behavior with elegance, polite and refined culture. The construction of "high culture" was also used to preserve status and privileges. The Press was an important way of communication and opinion formation to frame the city population in an idealized model of civilization based on the European molds. Through the newspapers we see a clash between the several identities that coexist in the city. In one side they try to build a positive image of certain habits, likes and funs. At the same time there were a set-up of exclusion, stigmatization and repression of others. The leisure was used to put in question and to hoax the impositions. Throughout the discourses about the leisure we can realize the existing polyphonies in the city, also the richness and the complexities of urban experiences. The authors who guided this research were Marshall Berman, Nicolau Sevcenko, Renato Ortiz and Sandra Jatahy Pesavento. They helped to think about the theme of modernity, the transformations, the new settings in the urban world, the constructions of meanings and the representations of the group that lived in the city.
