In recent years, there has been intensified concerns regarding environmental issues and the destruction of planet Earth. Extreme weather events, rising sea levels, increased deforestation, and global warming have been recurring subjects on the news, in environmental agendas, in legislations, and certainly, inside learning institutions. Within the academia, the restlessness coming from these events has been fortifying research in Environmental Education, with the goal of raising awareness and educating people to look at the relationship between humans and the environment more tenderly, promoting new, more sustainable, and ecological relationships. Concerns such as these ones are contained in the Brazilian legislation through public policies related to Environmental Education, generating a massive encouragement to work with this subject inside the classroom, and also interdisciplinarily. Taking into consideration that this is a recent debate in everyday school life, the present dissertation has the aim of investigating how young middle school students of a public state school in Paraná, Brazil, face the relationship between humans and nature from a historic point of view. Therefore, this paper falls within the Historical Education field, since it is designated to analyze how the students develop their historical awareness and assign meaning to environmental topics, through historical narratives. The research analyzes the cognitive process of assigning meaning through the theory developed by the German historian and philosopher Jörn Rüsen (2001, 2006, 2007, 2014a, 2014b, 2015), as well as the entire scientific field of Historical Education. The investigation was supported by the methodological techniques of Quantitative Research, highlighting Ground Theory’s elements. The studied group was formed by 31 young students of Colégio Estadual Irmã Ambrósia Sabatovich, located in the rural area of São José dos Pinhais, at Colônia Marcelino. The final result of this research points to various narrative modalities through which their relationship with nature gains historical meaning to these young students, which also connects with their practical life and their knowledge of certain substantial school-based contents. In this respect, it could be observed and proved that the assigning of historical meaning does not only come from the subjective perception of the respondents but also from the knowledge (or the lack of it) of some specific school contents
