Abstract: The main objective of this research was to investigate how learners of Brazilian Portuguese as a second language acquire and use the null subject, in the light of the generative theory conceived by Noam Chomsky. As language teachers, we decided to explore the challenges students face when learning the usage of null subjects and how to best approach this topic in the classroom. We started from the premise that, when the learner acquires a second language, they will make use of Universal Grammar, and will seek help in the grammar of their first language to better understand the concepts of null subject. An empirical research was conducted with 20 participants; the control group was composed of 10 native Brazilian Portuguese speakers. The experimental group was composed of 10 non-native speakers living and learning Brazilian Portuguese in Brazil, five of which were French speakers and five were Hispanic speakers. The results of our empirical research showed that learners of Brazilian Portuguese as a second language often chose to use a pronoun to fill in an empty subject position in a sentence, thus showing a high average of pronoun usage for subjects in a sentence. We also verified that in textual productions, learners spontaneously produced sentences containing a null subject, i.e., without a pronoun, even those who are French native speakers and are not used to the usage of null subjects. This research also sought to contribute to the teaching of the null subject in BP in BP/L2 classrooms, with the aim of strengthening the pedagogical practices already used in the classrooms.
