Abstract: Elected in a democratic regime, through direct elections, the 38th president of the Republic brought to the Executive Power's discourse memories of the military dictatorship (1964-85), accompanied by systematic and direct attacks on journalists and communication vehicles, with comments demoralizing the press work, threats and vulgar language. This dissertation aims to understand the functioning of the President of the Republic's discourse about the press in the years 2019 and 2020, in Brazil. The research question is: how does the imaginary of the press as an enemy materialize in the Bolsonaro government's speech? To answer this question, the theoretical-methodological devices of Discourse Analysis, founded by Michel Pêcheux, in France, reread and transformed by Eni Orlandi, in Brazil, are mobilized. The conceptual network is structured by concepts such as imaginary formation, ideology, subject, discursive place, pre-constructed, discursive memory, among others. The archive has been constituted of discursive materialities that made it possible to cut a corpus, signaling a Manichean imaginary construction, which conceives the world in a dual way, in the confrontation of good against evil. This discursive functioning silences the possible meaning’s effects between these two extremes. In the set of projections, there is, on the one hand, the president as victim, savior of the people, truth bearer, messiah, courageous; on the other, the press: enemy, conspirator, liar, coward. As the contradiction is constitutive of the discourse, the game of imaginary formations presents conflicting opposites: the president as authoritarian, in discourses through which the crimes committed by the military dictatorship (1964-1985) resonate through discursive memory, also as a democrat, victim of a press which is projected by the division between evil and good. In the discourse under analysis, the press and social media are treated as synonyms, erasing the differences between these media, which have different practices and functionings. By using this discursive strategy, the Chief Executive, while delegitimizing journalism, produces a meaning effect of reliability on social media that disseminate fake news in favor of the government.
