Abstract: The purpose of this work is to check the possibility of applying to groups of children the methodology of offering reading stimulation to children individually, recomended by DOMAN (1984). Contact and memorization of written words are inicial steps of Doman’s methodology for offering visual stimulation to children, individually. Those steps are necessary for acquisition of the capacity of reading to take place. The hipotesis was that Doman’s program of reading stimulation to a group of children, instead to one child at a time, leads to the same results, both in short and long term. The effects, under both conditions, would be more significant than the performance of the control group. The project was carried out in SESC Recreação Infantil, an institution located in central Curitiba. Five children were subjected to individual stimulation. Eight children received it as a group. Another group of eight children was taken as a control group being not worked with. Data was collected in one test performed before the application of the method and two tests performed after it. The results were converted into the number of correct answers and treated statistically. The daily notes, taken during the process, were also considered in order to complement the discussion of the data. There was no development for the children in the control group. The children subjected to both individual and group training had a significant (and similar) progress in memorization of written words. The results of the second test performed after the intervention suggest that there was no significant regression of correct answers after the period of time betwen the two tests in any of the groups subjected to intervention. There is an indication that the hipothesis cannot be rejected. Several modifications introduced by the researcher, due to the reaction of the children and to the w ork conditions in the institution, and other important methodological changesmay have influenced the results, though, restricting its broadness. Those facts, result from being this work an exploratory work, making it necessary that further research is made in order to enlighten some aspects which were not well comprehended.
