Abstract: Mário de Sá-Carneiro (1890-1916), who is one of the most important names of the First Modernist Generation in Portugal (known as "Geração de Orpheu"), looked into the modern subject like just a few other artists did. He is a member of the Modernism, an artistic movement that started in the 1850s and lasted until the middle of the 20th century, and that have as one of the mainly characteristics the scanning of the subject. This Portuguese writer produced a work which presents some intriguing and original analysis and representations of the self. His varied artistic production comprises letters, poems, plays and narratives in prose. These narratives – 16 texts published in three books – Princípio (1912), A confissão de Lúcio (1914) e Céu em fogo (1915) – constitute the corpus of this thesis. The texts were written in the peak of Positivism, a time when reason and objective reality were dominants. They bring alternatives to discuss the plural and contradictory modern subject into this scenario due to the enlargement of the conventional real limits and the creation of an apparently unlikely reality, permeated by subjectivity and mysteries. The texts have a unity of themes and can be read and interpreted in countless ways. In this thesis, the 16 texts were divided in a way to analyze how Sá-Carneiro explores the issue of the self – mainly an artist who is not able to belong to the context where he lives in –, not only as an individual self, but also his relation with the society where he belongs, with other selves and with the art. Three texts, one of each publication – O incesto, A confissão de Lúcio and A estranha morte do professor Antena –, appear more than one time through the research, being links to the chapters and axis to the analysis.
