Abstract: This study approaches Jesuit Reductions of South America as symbolic and geographical forms. Therefore, it refers to theories of esthetics, semiotics and social interaction which have been incorporated into a renewed approach of a Cultural Geography that is mainly based on esthetic criteria. The research is intended to understand the materialization and transformation of a utopia to a heterotopia as fully linked to the field of social relations and their symbologies. Following Bakhtin, the symbolic formation of a utopia takes place between the "oeuvre in itself" (in our case architecture and urbanism), ethics (understood as social theory of agency) and knowledge (ideologies). All three fields interact to form social structures and processes of subjectivation of individuals. Umberto Eco explains that in such a situation a variety of codes is active (using the example of architecture), and Ernst Cassirer shows the way how a symbolic form can become a bridge between materiality and ideas. Among codes and materializations sociality (Maffesoli) is surging in a situation of cultural and syncretic encounter between Jesuits and Guaraní. The example of the Reductions of the Trinta Povos around the Brazilian, Argentine and Paraguay border, and mainly the respective churches there, shows how synesthesia and the material modulation of temples are participating in the construction of a space of cultural synthesis and the organization of everyday life. The research also highlights that spatialities and everyday situations of the indigenous population have become only partially influenced by Jesuit ideology, but are mainly complementary to the architectural language, such as the esthetic techniques of the Jesuits and the Guaraní have contributed to a specific social oeuvre in its material and corporal form.
