Linguagem e realidade : do signo ao discurso

Abstract

Resumo: Esta tese aborda a relação entre linguagem e realidade, percorrendo os níveis do signo lingüístico, da proposição, do ato de fala, e, finalmente, do discurso. Pressupomos que a questão da referência torna-se crucial a partir de fins do século XIX, e hoje, com a pragmática, dissolve-se como questão primordial, o que traz conseqüências proveitosas para a lingüística e para a filosofia da linguagem. Analisamos a contribuição do estruturalismo de veio saussureano, a noção de interpretante de Peirce, a relação da proposição com a realidade em Frege, Russell e no primeiro Wittgenstein. O ponto de virada é a noção de jogo de linguagem de Wittgenstein II. A análise passa a acentuar o papel do locutor situado, do uso lingüístico, de modo que a proposição, como fica claro com Austin, passa de central e apenas um entre os atos de fala com valor ilocucionário. Também o pragmatismo contemporâneo, de Quine a Davidson, mostra a inescrutababilidade da referência. Na contraposição entre as posições externalista e internalista (Chomsky), mostramos que a primeira dá melhor conta da relação linguagem/realidade. No último capítulo, ressaltamos a importância da análise do discurso, através de dois de seus principais representantes, Foucault e Habermas. Em que pesem suas diferenças, ambos conduzem a discussão para o terreno político, para o poder do discurso. A linguagem é contingente, mas, ao mesmo tempo, é pelo discurso que o dizer assume uma força, enquanto poder (Foucault) e enquanto ação comunicativa (Habermas).

Abstract: This thesis is a study about the relation between language and reality, searching through the levels of the linguistic sign, the proposition, the speech act and, finally, the discourse. We presuppose that the question of reference became a crucial one since the end of the 19th century. Nowadays, with the pragmatics, it has been dissolved as a prime question, what brings rich consequences for both Linguistics and Philosophy of Language. We analyse first the contribution of the saussurean structuralist position on sign, the notion of interpret of Peirce, the relation between proposition and reality in the conception of Frege, Russel and Wittgenstein I. The turning point is the notion of linguistic game, as it is developed by Wittgenstein II. Since then, the analysis of reference foccusis the attention on the role of the speaker in situation, on the use of language. In this way, the proposition, as Austin clearly shows, is no more central, instead, it is just one among the various speech acts, wich provides language of illocionary strenght. The contemporaneous pragmatism, in a parallel way, from Quine to Davidson, makes evident the inscrutability of reference. Contrasting externalism and internalism (Chomsky), we believe that the first position gives a better account of the relation between language and reality. In the last chapter, we enphasize the importance of discourse analysis, through two of its main thinkers, Foucault and Habermas. Even considering its differences, both conduct the discussion to the political field, to the power of the discourse. Language in contingent, although, at the same time, it is due to the discourse, that saying assumes a strength, as power (Foucault) and as communicative action (Habermas).
