e Expressão, dentro do contexto escolar e comunitário. Abstract: The intention is to devise a methodologico-linguistié solution, authentic and valid, to the reality existing in rural schools. The focus of the study concerns itself basically with the area of communication and expression within the school and community context. The rural community selected is that of Roça Velha, an agricultural zone situated in the municipality of Sao Jose dos Pinhais, Parana. The social, economic, cultural and religious data touch upon the aspirations and mantality, where possible, of three generations. An almost total social, economic and cultural stagnation is evident. The school offers nothing by way of stimuli: curricula, programmes, books (when they exist) do nothing to provoke interest, being utterly contrary to reality, imported from the large urban centres, factors of rural rejection. Numerous interviews, both oral (taped) and written, staying and mixing with the population, teamwork, official documentation on curricula, programmes, books, scEool materials; the functional role and educational level of the teacher; school environment; - interviews with education authorities; family and community environment; these are some of the elements bearing on the educative process considered in the analysis. The basic frustration lies in the lack of any real links between the reality of the rural situation and the avowed educational aims. Not absorption, nor assimilation, nor incorporation, nor integration, but almost a rejection manifests itself. Strictly speaking, there does not exist any valid indication of a capacity for communication and expression. The school, lacking equipment, simply accepts the pupil without being able to educate him: he is neither a person nor a creative agent, in a crude and ineffective situation. The only conclusion is to propose complete curricular restructuring, bibliographic adaptation, and the introduction of books written specifically for rural consumption, leading to the slow, gradual conquest, working outwards from within, of new cultural areas. The reorientation of rural educational policy and a joint governmental and community effort are imperative. Otherwise, in addition to a great deal of useless expenditure we shall see the marginalisation of the peasant, vexed and discouraged by recognizable ignorance, in a so-called progressive world. Teaching is born of life; it is life, serving it and dignifying mankind.
