Abstract: The quality of representative democracies, especially instituted after the third wave of democratization, is directly linked to the exercise of the right to vote and the true resemblance between representatives and civil society. This study tests an model for understanding "electoral decision-making" as an object of study, using Lau and Redlawsk assumptions. An in-depth interview panel is applied within eleven voters in the cities of Curitiba and Brasilia during the presidential elections of 2014 in Brazil. The main hypothesis is the predominance of "intuitive" decision-making patterns, where heuristics and cognitive shortcuts predominate as opposed to an impartial informational process. In addition to confirming the hypothesis presented, the study highlights the relevance of the candidate image, not only as a way of judgment but also as a stereotype to justify political disinterest. Furthermore, heuristics and edition have great influence in how the voters constructed their choice. Keywords: electoral decision-making; political emotions, electoral behavior, presidential elections
