Abstract: Within the theoretical and methodological frameworks of the History of the thought of the Church and of the Late Medieval Political Theory, the following study friar Álvaro Pelayo's Mirror for Kings (Speculum Regum, 1341-1344), considering as the guiding hypothesis the project of building an ideal royal identity for Christian rulers, notably the Portuguese and Castilian ones. From this, we examine the figure of the friar and of his own time, and taking from these the material for the understanding of his sentences, in addition to look carefully the very apparent motivations behind the writting of the Speculum Regum. From these, we noted Pelayo's loyalty to Alfonso XI, king of Castille, and his efforts to strengthen him politically, giving substance for the support of his position on the internal political scene, in addition to seeking theoretical means for the resurgence of the Castilian hegemony which once prevailed in the Iberian Peninsula. Having this situation in mind, we will examine some elements of the source that excel in the building up of this identification of the sovereign, being them the ensemble of all the Cardinal Virtues and their counterparts, the vices. These result in raw material for the edification of a king who is ethical and morally capable of leading a kingdom within the guidelines of a Christendom united by the Christian doctrine - respecting an expected political order by a member of the clergy faithful to the ideals of papal theocracy like Pelayo was. In this sense, we isolate and highlight the virtue of Justice as the central feature of this sovereign according to the friar, being this virtue responsible for giving each person what is due him at the same time that it is used by the king to mantain the harmony of the kingdom while leading all his subject pilgrims to eternal life through the defense of Commom-Good.
