A respeito do repertório

Group instrumental teaching shows advantages such as democratization of the access to
the information, interaction among students, playful environment, cooperation,
motivation and so forth. In order to investigate the motivation in such environment, the
chosen theoretical framework was the Self-Efficacy Theory. The target was to investigate
the motivation to learn how to play the guitar in group based on the sources of the
influence of the self-efficacy beliefs (mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal
persuasion and physiological states). The methodology used was a small survey made by
the use of a questionnaire. A total of 21 guitar students from an institution located in
Curitiba (Brasil) took part in the research. The research participants were 12 male students
and 7 female students, most from 9 to 14 years old. The most quoted reasons to start
learning how to play the guitar were related to intrinsic motivation. The students
evaluated positively the group classes, affirming they were able to share and to learn from
each other. Based on the results, it was possible to confirm the hypothesis of the research,
observing that the motivation to learn how to play the guitar in the group context can be
intensified by the following aspects: (a) from the successful experiences that the students
have in the group environment; (b) from the vicarious experiences observing peers
learning during the classes; (c) from verbal persuasion of the instructor and classmates;
(d) from physiological indicator of positive experiences of playing within the group.
Considering the repertoire they learned, all the students alleged to have liked the songs,
mainly when they took part in the choice of those songs. The results of this study pointed
out to the relevance of the relations between group guitar classes and the motivational
process of the student, emphasizing particularly the increase of self-efficacy beliefs in
this context. Also, it was possible to verify that the choice of repertoire was a relevant
factor in order to motivate and consequently, learning the instrument.
