Embora, existam processos similares, este processo é inédito considerando-se os materiais estudados e as condições de reação utilizadas. dc.description.abstractAbstract: The rigid polyurethane foams are a versatile group of segmented polymers, highly crosslinked with excellent mechanical and thermal insulation properties. They're the thermal insulation materials used for instance in freezers and refrigerators. Although, their consumption is increasing, nowadays, there isn't a satisfactory process available for the recycling of these materials in countries like Brazil. The partial alkaline hydrolysis of these foams seems to be a promising alternative for their recycling, because it is feasible in low conditions and turns the polyurethane compatible with the other resins, because the PDMS coverage of the foams was soluble in the alkaline conditions of reaction. The approach used was firstly to characterize the basic chemical composition of the foam, through spectroscopic techniques and total hydrolysis with its products characterization. The total hydrolysis of the foam was slower and its products more complex than those proposed for the soluble polyurethanes be the literature. Next, the effect of time, temperature and presence of ultraviolet light irradiation were studied by accompanying the reaction by the amine index, through a experimental design 23 complete, which showed that the temperature was the only statistically significant effect and that there isn't a significant synergistic effect between the variables studied. The reaction was controlled by the thermodynamic equilibrium, which was reached when the amine index approached to zero. This condition was achieved with the lower temperature, lower time and without ultraviolet irradiation. These conditions are good for the economics of the process and to avoid catalytic effects in other resins like the epoxy. The compositions of the polyester and epoxy resins with the reacted polyurethane were prepared with the polyurethane concentration varying from 1 to 5% (w/w). The rheological study of the compositions prepared with the reacted polyurethane showed that the viscosity of the composition increased linearly with the concentration of polyurethane added and that it turned the epoxy resin more tixotropic without effect in rheological classification of the polyester. There was no effect in the process of cure of the resins. Finally, the mechanical analysis of the compositions showed that the adding of polyurethane had a reinforcing effect in the epoxy because of copolimerization and a plasticizing one in the polyester. The thermal analysis showed a reduction in the Tg values of all compositions and the morphological one showed an increase in crystallinity of the epoxy. The distribution of the polyurethane in the samples was homogeneous for both resins. The effect of the addition of polyurethane allied to its low density and high polarity turns the utilization of theses compositions very interesting from the application's point of view and also there's a local market for this kind of material. The recycling process developed is easy to use, not expensive and of its handling is not risky, that's why it's a promising option for the recycling of the rigid polyurethane foams. Although there are similar processes, this process is inedited considering the materials studied and the conditions utilized.
