Looking for freedom : a guerra e a liberdade na visão dos soldados negros na guerra civil americana (1861-1865)

Abstract

Resumo: Na obra Visões da Liberdade, o autor Sidney Chalhoub procura acessar as racionalidades e sentimentos dos escravos com relação à liberdade e à escravidão, reconstruindo suas percepções dos processos que envolviam a possibilidade de alforria. Desta forma, junta fragmentos, interpretando seus significados, voltando-se para detalhes sutis que podem ser a chave para entender como os agentes históricos do passado viam suas próprias lutas. É preciso compreender sistemas de valores, crenças, estratégias de ação e articulação entre os sujeitos, bem como a construção simbólica de personagens que figuram como protagonistas dos processos de mudança. Desta maneira, o autor desenvolve a ideia de que é preciso compreender o sentido que as personagens históricas atribuíam às suas lutas, considerando que escravos e libertos produziam valores próprios, resultantes de experiências particulares e coletivas. A partir disso, o objetivo consiste em compreender a influência e importância das visões da guerra e da liberdade forjadas durante a Guerra Civil norte-americana, tendo por base a análise de cartas escritas por soldados e civis negros que vivenciaram a guerra. O conjunto documental é composto de 99 cartas remetidas do norte ou de ocupações nortistas no sul. Compreende-se que a utilização de documentação epistolar auxilia os historiadores a pensar vínculos pessoais e redes sociais, partindo das relações construídas pelos atores sociais com o objetivo de compreender como sua ação pode mudar contextos históricos. Nesta pesquisa, as missivas auxiliam na compreensão das inter-relações pessoais, no mapeamento de concepções próprias sobre o processo de conquista da liberdade e na construção de valores e ideias com as quais os indivíduos atuam e se relacionam entre si. Abstract: In the book Visões da Liberdade, the author Sidney Chalhoub attempts to access the rationalities and feelings of slaves regarding freedom and slavery, rebuilding their perceptions of the cases involving the possibility of emancipation. In this way, the historian puts fragments together, interpreting their meanings, turning towards subtle details that may be the key to understand how the historical past agents saw their own struggles. It is necessary to understand value systems, beliefs, action strategies and linkage between individuals and the symbolic construction of characters who act as protagonists of the change processes. In this manner, the author develops the idea that we need to understand the sense that historical characters assigned to their fights, considering that slaves and freedmen produced their own values, resulting from individual and collective experiences. From this, the objective of this study is to understand the influence and importance of the visions of war and freedom, forged during the American Civil War, based on the analysis of letters written by black soldiers and civilians who experienced the war. The document set consists of 99 letters sent from the North or by northerners occupations in the South. It is understandable that the use of epistolary documentation helps historians to think personal bonds and social networks, based on the relationships built by social actors in order to understand how their actions could change historical contexts. In this research, the letters help in the comprehension of interpersonal relationships, on the identification of conceptions about the process of conquest of freedom and construction of values and ideas with which individuals act and relate to each other.
