Os resultados mostram a importância dos fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista no Paraná para a fixação do carbono da atmosfera, importante serviço ambiental prestado pelas florestas. dc.description.abstractAbstract: The remnants of Mixed Rainy Forest in Paraná cover about 1.87 million ha, representing a vast expanse of forest fragments that need to be preserved. One way to value these forest fragments, seeking its preservation, is demonstrate the ability that they have storage and carbon sequestration in forest biomass. Thus, this work aimed to quantify the stock and the dynamics of biomass and carbon in Mixed Rainy Forest fragments in Paraná. The work was developed using data permanent plots installed in the cities of Boa Ventura de São Roque, Castro, Coronel Vivida and Reserva do Iguaçu, all in Paraná state. The areas are geographically distributed seeking to represent the region of coverage of Mixed Rainy Forest in Paraná. The samples of biomass and carbon were conducted in 2009 and the forest inventories in 2007 and 2012. Were adjusted hypsometric equations for the areas under study, in order to compose the database. For the trunk, bark, branches, leaves and the total the tree, regression equations were fitted to estimate the biomass and carbon, and the best equations were validated with data from a control base, obtained of plots permanent located in the municipality of General Carneiro, state of Paraná, in an area of Mixed Rainy Forest. Using the best adjusted equations, the stock of biomass and carbon of the areas were estimated in the years 2007 and 2012 to assess the dynamics of the forest fragments. The results revealed that of the 117 tree species observed in the areas of study, only 7 were common to the four studied units. For the hypsometric equations, adjusted for the four areas simultaneously, was observed equations with low coefficient of determination and high standard error of the estimate, indicating that the adjusted equations can present high level of error in the estimates. For the equations of biomass and carbon, were observed good results in adjustments for the total tree and trunk. In the adjusting for the bark, the results were median, while for the branches and leaves, the adjusted equations showed the lowest accuracy in estimates. Both for biomass and carbon, were not observed best settings in equations formed by the independent variables dap and total height, compared to only formed by dap. In the validation of the equations, using the control data, showed that the equations for biomass and carbon showed good results in the estimates for the total tree, trunk and for the branches, indicating that the equations can be applied in similar areas to those used in work. An increase was observed biomass, carbon and basal area in all permanent plots studied from 2007 to 2012, indicating that the fragments are showing growth and high carbon fixation capacity. The results show the importance of Mixed Rainy Forest fragments in Paraná for fixing carbon from the atmosphere, important environmental service provided by forests.
