Abstract: This work starts with the observation that in sentences of the texts produced by historians, the temporal interpretation is not necessarily related with the verbal morphology. Therefore, some problems are pointed out: (1) why is it possible to use the inflected verb in other verbal tenses – like present, future – to refer to the past, in other words, what guarantees that in a history text, Getúlio Vargas came/come/will come to power are understood like events located in the past? (2) How the names of individuals and events guarantee the temporal reference? The hypothesis to be defended is that the temporal localization in texts produced by historians is guaranteed by individuals located in time, that is, periods and names and that also brings a temporal information. To defend this hypothesis this work analyzed sentences taken from texts produced by historians related to the historical event Estado Novo. The theories that sustain the analysis pass through the theories of points and intervals of time, mainly the Smith’s (1997) work – that is based on the Reichenbach’s (1947) referential temporality – and Klein’s (1994), that privilege the morphology. Both of them will be contested, since they do not include the time value of individuals. Therefore, the theoretical discussion extends to the descriptive study done by Móia (2003) about the time-denoting expressions and to the semantic event. Here, the theoretical path comes together with the works of Davidson (1969), Parsons (1990), Bach (1986) and Link (1998), following the tradition that temporarily relates individuals and events. Link (1998) proposes an ontology for individuals and events in which he considers that both carry temporal traces, as well as constructs a representation system that enables to observe the relation between the sets of
individuals, events, time, space and roles that individuals play in the events. From this perspective, the historical event Estado Novo will be considered like a complex event (LINK, 1998). This implies the consideration that the name Estado Novo has temporal parts. So, it is possible to affirm that this name denotes a time interval (from 1937 to 1945) and that it is also a time-individual. With the idea that events and individuals have temporal traces, based on the Link’s (1998) model, is possible to explain the localization of historical happenings and process in the time – especially considering the necessity of individuals located in time. In this way, this work arises to the possible conclusion that the semantic of the past gives freedom to the verb tense to vary without the alteration of the time location of events, since this is
guaranteed by time-denoting expressions and individuals located in time. Key-words: event semantic, individuals, time
