Abstract: In this work the effect of adding inorganic nanoparticles, in this case the layered double hydroxides containing organic anions intercalated, with the polymer matrix of cassava starch plasticized with glycerol. The objective consists in producing and inexpensive and fully biodegradable polymer to potentially replace the conventional polymers. The layered double hydroxides studied were synthesized in the Zn;Al molar ratios of 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 using two methods, by direct co-precipitation and ion exchange. The intercalated organic anions were salicylate, citrate, gluconate and mucicate and plasticized starch nanocomposite were prepared only with the layered double hydroxides intercalated with the anion salicylate. The nanocomposites were obtained by mixing the starch with glycerol (plasticizer) and the filler and the speciments were obtained by extrusion and injection molding and stored at 30% of humidity. The materials were investigated by X ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) and mechanical tests. Although the synthesized LDHS have nanometer dimensions, in general the biopolymer did not show significant mechanical properties improvement when compared to neat thermoplastic starch. This is probably due to the lower interaction between the filler and the polymeric matrix.
