Abstract: This study aimed to verify the influence of hormonal variations over the mechanical behaviour of women intervertebral discs. It was distributed 120 questionnaires to women aged between 18 and 25 years-old, from which 93 were answered and returned and 20 were intentionally selected to take part of the present study. Subjects were assigned in two groups taking into account the use (GC) or not (GN) of oral contraceptives. Participants attended 3 laboratory sessions that coincided with important events of their sexual cycle. In these visits, subjects performed a physical task (walking with a 15% body weight load) during 30 minutes. During this period stature measurements were performed at every 6 minutes in an attempt to determine stature variations. After the task, subjects remained standing during 30 minutes and their stature recovery was assessed. Results showed no significant differences stature loss and recovery between groups. However, intra-group analysis showed greater stature loss in the GN during the luteal phase. The intra-group stature recovery indicated a smaller rfecovery in the GN during the proliferative phase. A comparable behaviour was found during the proliferative and luteal phases in the GC. The analysis of stature loss rate indicated differences between groups during the luteal phase. The GN group presented the greatest stature loss rate during the luteal phase. These findings evidence that the sexual cycle interferes in the mechanical behaviour of the intervertebral discs, which may have occurred due to hormonal variations that take place during some periods of the sexual cycle. Such variations may be the result of some collagen metabolism changes and edemas.
