Abstract: Since the end of the nineteenth century, the sergeants of Brazilian Army used to demand internal power and prestige which were not fulfilled by the summit of that institution. Understanding the effective role of the sergeants on the battlefield during World War II, saw the group grow up their professional self-esteem. At the same time, contact with more liberal armies became more intense shades of distinction in relational praxis of the Brazilian Army. When they returned to Brazil, they organized themselves in associations and clubs that became open to some party politics and made some public criticism to the asymmetrical relations of power that they had experienced in the Army. During the Cold War, because of the high officialdom, the dispute was associated to the communist penetration in the Armed Forces. When the Military Coup of 1964 became incendiary, the sergeants' claims were quickly censored as the military summit controlled its requirements with palliatives. In a hidden way, the tense relations between sergeants and officers had remained and accumulated throughout the years. More than a decade after the political opening, the latency became explicit and the sergeants, individually and collectively, were involved in a legal dispute over their rights. Hence, it is important to comprehend that the end of the war and the turn of the millennium were the two moments of inflection in the sergeants' power axis. Therefore, this thesis has privileged that interim period to be analyzed. Based on the life experience of six military people who have served in the Army since 1950, this study focuses on the sergeants' professional socialization processes, their group identity and the representation they make of themselves and of other independent groups. From these processes this paper analyzes the dynamics of the relationship among those groups as well as how the sergeants measure and qualify the power distribution among them.
