Abstract: The control of defoliator caterpillars of the Thyrinteina arnobia species by using the spurs of the Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria, in establishments of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus urophylla, was studied in its economic aspects in the present study. The statistical differences between the dendrometric parameters utilized were also studied. The study considered the dendrometric data original from 4 continual inventories, grouped in 3 different seasons: years before, months after and years after the establishment being infested with the defoliator caterpillars of the T. arnobia species. The inventories sampled an area of approximately 4,000 hectares, planted with two main species of eucaliptus (E. grandis and E. urophylla) in three different soils (Typical quartzpsament, red and purple latossol) in the "Chamflora Agrícola LTD." properties in Luiz Antônio, São Paulo state (Brazil). The estimates of the volumetric production were carried out using models already adjusted for the management units belonging to the study area. The records of the defoliator caterpillars of the T. arnobia species occurrence, and its control with the spur of the B. thuringiensis bacteria, have allowed the stratification of the study area in four different infestation levels: high, medium, low and not infested. The cost of the control by hectare was US$ 12.50. The E. grandis and E. urophylla presented significant statistical differences only for the estimate of the future basal area at the age of seven years, in the season studied right after the infestation. The typical quartzpsament, red and purple latossol soils, presented highly significant statistic differences for the future volume at 7 years old and for the dominant height average estimates, for the inventory seasons of months after and years after the infestation. The areas presenting high, medium, low, and no infestation levels presented no significant statistic differences for the estimates of the future volume nor for the basal area neither for the dominant height average, independently of the 3 study seasons. The caterpillar control with the B thuringiensis bacteria spur was efficient in the way of keeping the productive homogeneity of the studied area, even after infested. The control has compromised values lower than 1% of the roduced wood, in m^/hectare, bark included, at 7 years old. The control was also economically viable, by stopping the productivity losses caused by the defoliation and allowing that the volumetric production prognosis was over US$ 383.00/hectare, or 31 times more than the control costs. The differences between the production estimates in volume for the 7 years age between the seasons before and months after the infestation, demonstrated by its average annual increases, have allowed a return, right in the first year of the control, of US$34.20/hectare/year or, 3 times the control costs. Not carrying out the control could have caused losses of between US$ 648.77 and US$878.91/hectare for the highly infested areas or, 55 to 70 times the cost of the control. For the areas presenting an average infestation level, the losses could be in between US$ 217.46 and US$ 295.29/hectare, and that means 17 to 24 times the control costs. For lowly infested areas the losses could be of USS 460.00/hectare, or 37 times the control costs.pt_BR
