O peregrino instruído: um estudo sobre o viajar e o viajante na literatura científica do iluminismo

Abstract

Resumo: A proposta desta dissertação é realizar um estudo sobre o viajar e o viajante na literatura científica do iluminismo. Tomo como objeto, mais especificamente, uma produção textual sui generis, conhecida como instruções científicas de viagem, que tratava de organizar uma série de regras de observação, procedimentos técnicos e comportamentos a serem seguidos pelos viajantes durante as viagens. A hipótese da qual parto é de que as instruções, enquanto gênero lítero-científico, estabeleceram topoi argumentativos constitutivos de um modo específico de viajar e ser viajante no período. Para avaliar tal proposição, procuro situar as instruções dentro de uma tradição lítero-pedagógica de viagens que remonta ao início do período moderno e, a partir do meu corpus documental, destacar os principais elementos estruturais e discursivos que as caracterizam. O que evidencio, em um primeiro momento, são principalmente os aspectos e as relações textuais, bem como o caráter sistematizante das instruções (capítulo I). Em seguida, identifico alguns topoi argumentativos dessa produção, explorando-os em dois campos complementares, o primeiro voltado para o modus operandi - o olhar e a descrição dos objetos da natureza (capítulo II) -, e o segundo, voltado para o perfil - os valores morais e as habilidades físico-psicológicas que o viajante deveria possuir (capítulo III). Com base nesse repertório, trato de elaborar uma discussão entre instruções e também alguns relatos de viagem, descrevendo-os e analisando-os em conjunto, com o fito de perceber de que maneira esses gêneros articulavam-se ao núcleo epistemológico do viajar e do viajante e configuravam-lhes um modo específico de agir. Procuro partir de uma perspectiva mais geral, tomando como material empírico instruções redigidas em diversos países e relatos elaborados em diferentes cantos do globo.

Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to undertake a study about the traveling and the traveler into Enlightenment?s scientific literature. I consider, more specifically, a sui generis textual production known as scientific traveling instructions that aim to organize a set of rules of observation, technical procedures and abilities to be followed by the travelers during the journeys. I start from the premise that the instructions, while a scientific-literary genre, have established argumentative topoi according to a specific way of traveling and being a traveler at that time. To evaluate this proposition I try to situate the instructions inside a literary-pedagogical tradition of traveling, dating back to the early modern period and, from my documentary corpus, highlighting the main structural and discoursive elements that characterize them. What I show in a first moment are mainly the aspects and textual relations as well as the sistematic character of the instructions (chapter 1). Next, I identify some argumentative topoi of that set, exploring them in two complementary fields: the first one focused on the modus operandi - observations and description of the natural objects (chapter 2) - and the second one focused on the profile - moral values and physical and psychological skills a traveler should have (chapter 3). On that basis I try to draw up a discussion between instructions and also some travel writings, describing and analyzing them together in order to understand how that genres were articulated to the episthemological core of traveling and traveler and set a specific way of acting. I start from a most global perspective taking as empirical basis instructions written in several countries and reports produced in different corners of the globe.
