Abstract:This paper examines Oscar Niemeyer Museum from the sociological point of view and also its audience, between 2002 and 2011. It aims to understand the causes that have made it become a cultural icon museum in Curitiba, capital of thestate of Paraná, and the hybrid positions that were shapedin this social space, since the object of this study broaches the tension that the supply of symbolic goods articulates today between the cult, the massive and popular, analysis parameters that do not follow rigid models. These parameters break with the usual boundaries of social classes and cultural strata, due to fact that the distribution and communication of these goods are not only linked to family and school. It takes as its theoretical orientation the notions of hybridization (Canclini), and government and general public (Habermas). The discussion permeates Paraná's museological field, which involves the creation and regulation of Paraná's State Secretariatof Culture (SEEC/PR) and the Museum State Coordination (COSEM), responsible for the museological field in the state. In relation to the MON it specifically works with the legal issues and the management of the museum's collection and temporary exhibitions, architecture, location and the audience. The conduct of the research points out three factors, among others correlated, which justify MON's popularity: the role of the executive and its partners, the media coverage through intensive cultural marketing and the museum legal model being a Civil Society Organization of Public Interest (CSOPI). The CSOPI allows the museum to develop its artistic and cultural projects anchored by state-owned enterprises and individuals through the Rouanet Law. It alsoleads to the conclusion that MON is a postmodern museum and democratic, which offers art, culture and leisure, whose use-value falls in the audience affinity with the city. In the conflicts between different segments of the audience, the highest tension is between the government and the cultural elite of Paraná with erudite knowledge, that does not see itself represented by MON and that until now retained the positions as cultural leaders changing from the SEEC and the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba (FCC). Therefore, the fact that the state chose MON as a government priority in the cultural area changes the previous configuration. Roberto Requião when promoting a public policy directed to the general public, showed that hisstrategies differ from the interests of the artistic and cultural leaders and makes
MON a popular space.
