Abstract: This study has the purpose of studying the auxiliary cavalry companies of the village of Curitiba since Pombal ordered its military restructuring, in 1765, until 1777, when the Iberian Kingdoms have signed the Treaty of San Ildefonso. The main characteristics of this military force have already been studied by Nanci Leonzo, and locally by David Carneiro. In this way, here the purpose is not to redo that history just by the military point of view. Mainly, the research’s intention is to verify if and how the integrants of those militia took advantage of their positions as a sign of social distinction. The contemporary historiography which is dedicated to the understanding of the colonial sociability points out that this society used to reproduce, in its own way, the Old System’s values. That is why it is possible to know that the places in the social hierarchy were rated, in a great quantity of cases, according to distinction traits like the prestige and the quality. Furthermore, that historiography has been pointing out the importance of the feeling of belonging derived from the integration of the individuals to the power networks provided by the Lusitanian Crown. In the same time, it indicates that, strategically the individuals took advantage of those work positions to make strategies to move up to higher positions in the local social hierarchy. Those are the assumptions that guide the analytical plan of this study.
