Abstract: The theme of this thesis is the representation of the body in Brazilian academic painting in the second half of the nineteenth century. Historically, portrayal of the human body is the starting point and conceptual foundation of art. After all it is imagery of the human being which frames the narrative of history. The bodies produced in Brazilian Art and Literature form a cultural matrix. As pieces of Art and artistic expression, they are an integrated part of the cultural practice of the Brazilian Empire and its intellectual elite. The discourses connected to the portrayal of the human body, particularly in the categories of gender and ethnicity, are analyzed against the background of the emerging Brazilian nation in the second half of the nineteenth century. In the analysis of imagery sources – such as drawings produced by students and teachers for study purposes at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts between 1860 and 1890 and the nude paintings produced by artists Vitor Meirelles, Pedro Américo, Rodolfo Amoedo and Almeida Junior – different concepts of body, based on the 19th century biopolitical scientific discourses, can be discerned. The represented bodies, understood as objects of art, are shaped by the sciences of anatomy, physiology and follow the geometric enshrined in the classic doctrines of the theory of art. The analysis of imagery is complemented by various historical documents such as Statutes (1820, 1831, 1855), curricula of the Imperial Academy, lectures of the academic staff as well as reports about classes on "painting with live models". Additional sources for the analysis are descriptions of bodies in nineteenth-century literature in which - influenced by the romantic "indianismo" as well as Realism – authentic Brazilian body imagery is sketched and connected to cultural images of the Brazilian nation. Based on the concept of "representation", as presented by Roger Chartier, this thesis connects the perspectives rooted in history, the history of art and gender studies because the specification of body boundaries and Gender create a frame for historical discourse and criteria for the production of individual and collective forms of masculinity and femininity. The relationship between the performativity of gender and sex discursive category proposed by Judith Butler is used here as the primary theoretical framework. The history of the body in the arts under the gender perspective is also the history of specific views about the body imagined by and for the society of the Brazilian Empire. The images of the human body discussed in this thesis, which encompass the desires and fears of the emerging Brazilian nation, reflect a critical piece of Brazilian history: the complexity and heterogeneity of the Brazilian national project in the 19th century.pt_BR
