Abstract: This study investigates the polite strategies used by native speakers and English learners in the writing of a letter to the editor. In addition, this study is based on corpus analyses of the two specific groups in order to verify four main polite strategies such as: inclusive use; person's ocultation;rthetorical questions; and mitigagion/ modalization. Furthermore, it is aimed to perceive how the native speakers and the learners use these strategies in order to satisfy face needs. Based on the corpus analyses, it is possible to infer that native speakers use a great variety of strategies to protect speakers/ heares face and that their writing production seems to be less direct if compared to the letters produced by English learners. The results suggest that even though the learners make great use of the morpho-syntatic structure of English language, the writing of some learnes sounds rather inadequate whether compared to those produced by native speakers since their production lacks most of the polite strategies used by native speakers. Futhermore, the adequate command shown by some of the learners suggests that these ones have already acquired pragmatic knowledge and as a consequence wil behave themselves more apropriately in the real world. That is, the command of polite strategies might reveal not just the learner's level of knowlege in the second language but it may work to the teacher as a methodological tool for the teaching of a second language.
