Resumo: Mayer, A. P. F. (2010).
Abstract: Mayer, A. P. F. (2010. The relationship between family, school and development of overweight and obesity in children. Master Degree’s Dissertation, Universidade Federal do Paraná. This study aims to understand overweight and obesity in children and the relations with their family, and to verify if the involved schools present any control measures for this problematic, though a exploratory study. The involved participants were 139 elementary school children from 5th to 6th grade. (mean age = 11,45), their caretakers and the principal of their school, in the city of Palmeira – PR. The participants filled out a questionnaire with the following instruments: childhood feeding practices verification scale, scale of demand and responsiveness, Brazil economic classification criteria, weight and height to calculate BMI for both child and arents. The children also attended to a semistructured interview with the school’s principal. Two obese children were also interviewed along with their parents. The results point to a prevalence of 13% of overweight nd 5% of besity in children, occurring mainly in families in which the parents are married, present better economic status and the mothers have a job. For the paternal figure, the authoritative style was the one who showed higher numbers between the children with normal weight. Children with overweight had permissive and neglecting parents. The mothers of children with normal weight were neglecting, followed by the uthoritative ones, being the overweight bound to authoritative and permissive mothers. Authoritative fathers and mothers showed the best feeding practices with their children. The healthiest practices of children feeding practices are used by the caretakers mainly with the girls, besides that, there was only significant relation for restriction practice for weight controlling and the presence of obesity. Most of the children rated their feeding as adequate. They were satisfied with their bodies at the same time they wished to change something on it, on the feeding, on their families and on their own behavior. They also showed a positive perception about practicing sports. About the perception the children have from their parents, most of the answers were positive, differing from the parents perception regarding their children, which showed a reater number of answers with positive statements as negative statements. The Cluster’s analysis grouped children in three groups according to the feeding practices used by the mothers. The functional analysis of the wo cases allowed to understand a little bit more about the possible causes for the children being obese. The schools did not present any program dedicated to the theme, although they presented concernment into proportionate a balanced feeding and physical activity on the day life of the children. The present study shows that the overweight is bound to some family conditions and that the schools, even though they do not have programs dealing directly the studied phenomenon, seek balanced feeding and physical activity practices for the children.
