Abstract: Thi This work presents a study on the vertical thermal structure of the Brazil Current (BC) and the Malvinas Current (MC) based upon in situ measurements taken by Expandable- Bathythermographs (XBTs). These currents converge at the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean at the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC), considered one of the most energetic regions of the World Ocean, due its strong temperature gradients and local instabilities. The thermal structure of these two currents was investigated using umpublished data taken by the Brazilian Navy Oceanographic Support Ship (OSS) Ary Rongel while crossing the BMC in consecutive years (2002 to 2008) between the months of October and November. The observations were not previously discussed in the literature to our understanding, being carried out under the umbrella of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR). The average surface temperature of the BC estimated from the XBT profiles was approximately 18 °C while in the MC this temperature was about 8 °C. The largest standard deviation for the BC mean temperature profile for was 1.2 °C, occurring at 20 m depth. The MC’s largest standard deviation was of 0.7 °C at 40 m depth. During the Antarctic Operations (OP) 22 (2003) and 26 (2007), the water temperature corresponding to the BC region presented temperature values lower in comparison to other years for the same area. BC and MC, as expected, differ in relation to their thermocline depth, which was about 200 m for the BC and 35 for the MC, in mean. A study was also conducted to compare the OP’s in situ database with data from World Ocean Atlas 2005 (WOA05), which contains limatological averages on a scale of 1 ° x 1 ° latitude and longitude in a pre-established depth, for the same study area. There were analyzed the differences in patterns of temperature, depth of the thermocline and the vertical structure of temperature between the two databases. The average temperature of BC, with data from WOA05, for the month of November, was about 17 ° C, while for the MC was almost 9 ° C. The depth of the thermocline for the in situ data differed from the climatological average extracted from the WOA05: in the BC the thermocline depth was approximately of 191 m with the in situ data collected, against 95 m depth for the WOA05; in the MC, the thermocline depth was of 18.6 m (in situ) against 22 m (WOA05), approximately. The results found in this study may be useful for future studies on the variability of thermocline depth in the area of BMC and its impact on flows of heat and CO2 at that Global Ocean region.pt_BR
