southern Brazil since 1998, and has caused considerable damages to forestry. In order to
evaluate the infestation and damages of C. atlantica in function of the plantation date and
chemical treatment with imidacloprid, an experiment was established in Três Barras, in the
state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The treatment s consisted of four areas: the first one protected
with imidacloprid during all the period; the second without insecticide; the third with
imidacloprid and gel during planting; and the fourth with imidacloprid during planting. Each
area was subdivided in six blocks, each one planted every other month with 70 seedlings of
Pinus taeda in a tubet. Insect monitoring in the areas was done every 15 days, using visual
plant sampling and with yellow pan traps. The damages to the height and diameter were
evaluated at planting time and at the 6th and the 12th month. The nutritional condition of the
plants was verified at the end of the period. The infestation and damages were also correlated
with the water stress of the plants in the greenhouse. The populations of C. atlantica
established themselves preferentially on the upper third of the Pinus plants. The species
presented better development in the winter, however, the highest population peak was
recorded in February. Predators of the families Coccinellidae, Syrphidae and Chrysopidae and
the introduced parasitoid Xenostigmus bifasciatus (Braconidae) were registered associated to
the aphid populations, being density-dependent. The infestation of C. atlantica was
significantly higher in the unprotected area and in the area treated only at planting with
imidacloprid than in the other areas. However, the result of the infestations was not
significantly reflected in the damages of height and diameter of the plants. The plants
established in February and April were infested throughout the seasons, and the intensity of
the infestations decreased on the plants established in the later planting dates. It was observed
that the new seedlings were not attractive to C. atlantica, although this species shows a clear
preference for young plants or shootings of older plants. This fact was due to the poor
nitrogen nutritional condition of the 30 days seedlings. The infestation on the stressed plants
was approximately the double of the infestation registered in the non stressed plants, but, this
fact was not reflected significantly in the dendrometric parameters. The data obtained in this
research are very relevant for integrated pest management programs using silvicultural
strategies associated to biological control, therefore, reducing infestation and damages of C.
atlantica on Pinus areas in Brazil.
