| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | Abstract: The aim of this research was to analyze the results of two techniques for assessing writing: holistic and analytical. As we suspected that the most probable cause of distortion in the scoring process was the absence or inadequacy of scoring criteria, twenty compositions in English written by Brazilian university students were submitted to the judgement of ten teachers. The teachers were to score the compositions using first the "holistic technique"and then the "analytical technique". The results of these scorings were analyzed and it was found that there was significant disagreement among the variables. One teacher scoring the same set of compositions twice, but using different techniques, gave significantly different grades, and different teachers scoring the same set of compositions twice also presented significantly different scores. The study showed that there were correlations, interaction of the factors upon the dependent variable and fluctuations in the scoring of compositions regardless of the scoring technique used. These results suggest that we need to look closely at the way writing is assessed, and that we need to find ways of reducing the effects of subjectivity in the scoring process. | pt_BR |
