Abstract: Climate changes in lately years have been attributed to the increase in concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced since the Industrial Revolution. The existing concern has generated several strategies to contain the increase of GHGs. Carbon sequestration is one of the main strategies for the mitigation of global warming. Among the most important terrestrial systems to store carbon are the forests and the agroforestry systems. In southern Brazil, yerba mate is the main component of one of the oldest and most important agroforestry systems at the region; the cultivation is widespread in family farming. In addition to the economic and social benefits, the cultivation of yerba mate has potential for carbon sequestration for being a perennial crop and due to its constant growth and regeneration of the biomass in the harvest intervals (Alegre et al., 2007). In this sense, the purpose of this study was to assess carbon sequestration in soil in three production systems with yerba mate and a native herbal in order to value the contribution of this benefit to the environmental sustainability of systems. Furthermore, it was evaluated physical, chemical and biological attributes to identify differences in soil quality of the production systems and to determine the best production system. There was no statistical difference between the systems on the total carbon stock. However, numerically the native system and the system with historical of intercropping had higher values, while the herbal and the homogeneous system got the lower values. When it was evaluated the labile organic matter, aggregate stability, microbial quotient the native herbal followed by the system with native tree species showed the best results, reflecting the low sensitivity of the TOC to detect sudden changes in ecosystems.
