Abstract: The present research evidences the process of attempting to preserve and reconstruct the identity elements of the ethnic and religious Mennonite group, who settled in the neighborhood of Boqueirão, in Curitiba, in the year 1934. Admitting that the identity of a group is not something that remains unchanged, this project shows the manner in which, for different contexts and situations, the basic elements of identification go through alterations, preserving, however, traditional elements. In ord r to recover this process of change/preservation, this research also observes how, during 14 years, the Mennonites constructed their patrimony and also developed social-educational practices that reinforced the inherent elements of their idealized identity: their mennonitentum. The time limited is 1948, since this is when the Mennonite school, which had been closed in the contexts of World War II and Vargas’ nationalistic policies, is once again under the Mennonites’ direction, although in a different social and political context than the one xperienced by the group in preceding years in Paraná. Throughout the research process the attempt was not at maintaining a catalog of the Mennonite identity but to deny the position of an inquiring researcher that would decide what are, and what are not, Mennonites. On the contrary, there was an attempt at clearing up and systemizing how the Mennonites represent themselves as well as systemizing the representation of those outside of their group did of them in the same context. The knowledge passed on in the practices and habits of the Mennonite were not only prescribed, but lived, experienced by the entire community, nowledge that, many times was taught outside of school, in baptisms, at varied celebrations, at wakes, etc., was strictly tied to the identity elements of the group.
