XIX e início do Séc. XX. Abstract: There is a kind of literary work that appears by the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th in which authors mix fiction and scientific fact (and into what they may eventually unfold): science fiction. These texts tend to show different registers, which vary, for instance, from essentially technical to poetic narrative, and this feature allows them to be considered as textually hybrid works. Besides the literary issues, this feature burdens translators with several problems that are similar – and in many cases are identical – to those that are found when translating technical texts. Therefore, and to set bases for choosing the proper translation strategies, it is convenient to have a model on to which one may rely to analyse texts and formalize procedures to guide proper treatments for each one of the different types of register and, specially, deal with both their technical and literary dimensions. The model that Christiane Nord suggests considering the basic principles of Functionalism and Hans J. Vermeer’s Skopostheorie can be applied here. Their purpose is to supply criteria for the choices translators have to make along the translation process. The work that follows is proposed as an elaboration and realization of the translation project for Murray Leinster’s short story "First Contact", including explanatory notes and textual comments that approach translation theory aspects, as well as references to science fiction characteristics and the points of contact this short story has with texts that were written before the 19th century and that show connections with the 20th century’s science fiction.
