Abstract: This work presents a youths' and adults literacy approach through rhymes, articulating this methodological proposal to Phillip Seymour's, L. S. Vygotsky's, M. M. Bakhtin's and Paulo Freire's theoretical proposals. From the first author, we focused the development of the orthographic and morfographic structures in the appropriation process of reading and writing, as well as the reciprocity between those structures, the linguistic conscience and the logographic and alphabetical bases of this model. From Vygotsky we point out some themes of the historical-cultural theory, such as the role of interaction, mediation and the development of the proximal zone in the learning process. We worked with some key concepts on language studies by Bakhtin, more specifically with the interactional, social and dialogical characters of the speaking/writing and his discussions concerning the word, the sense and the meaning in the appropriation of language. In the perspective of the Brazilian Education History, Paulo Freire's liberating proposal was discussed. Then we presented the literacy activities with rhymes developed with some pupils of the author of the present research and, in more detail, with Emília, student who participates in a group of young and adult students, enrolled in the municipal program Alphabetizing with Health. The subjects social-cultural context, the poetic texts and the material of daily use in the class room were the resources selected to expose the chosen student's interpretations and the written constructions for the empiric research. We verified that the work with rhymes and alliterations, in the exploration of your syllabic accesses - vocalic, consonantals, sounds and graphics -, mediated by the teacher, favors the understanding of the graphic-phonemical relationships of the orthographic writing. In this way, the subject enlarges his linguistic conscience and the interactions that he maintains with the founding processors: the logographic and alphabetical appropriation's base of the written system. We concluded that rhymes and repeated alliterations in a significant context make possible the identification of an orthographic and a morfographic words structure, and are auxiliary in the formation of representations and linguistic abstractions. At the same time, the speech and the written register of Emília's experiences, through the rhymes, influenced her language school learning and collaborated to amplify her orthographicaly written vocabulary.
