Abstract : This research has the aim of investigating the Science Teachers’ formation and their background knowledge to teach the Contemporary Social Themes. In order to know the learning representations of the graduating students and of those who quit the Biological Science Course in relation to the Contemporary Social Themes, as well as investigate the conditions the course offers so that the future teachers have the chance of inserting these themes in the natural science field. We have started from the premises that the teaching activities almost do not cover the Contemporary Social Themes. Because of this, the learning representation is not so meaningful and reflexive for the future teachers. We have adopted as methodology the qualitative research. For us to collect the data we needed, we have made the choice of analyzing documents, emends and teaching plans of the obligatory and optional subjects which were part of the graduation course from the year 2000 to 2005. With this, we tried to verify in which way the Contemporary Social Themes are covered in the curriculum of the course. In order to collect the data from the subject participants, 20 graduating students and 6 who quit studying, we have used the Focal Group Technique. Later, the collected data were analyzed according to the technique of analyses of the content. Concerning the representations the graduating students as well as those who quit studying have of their learning of the Contemporary Social Themes, they all stated that the course did not offer meaningful and consistent learning conditions of the themes. They have pointed out the technician features of the course focusing more in the bachelor degree rather than in the licensing one. The learning of the didactic and pedagogical knowledge and the contact (or practice) of the school space are offered only at the end of the course, in the last periods of the course. This fact prevents the Biology and Science teachers from having a good formation. All of the participants stated that some subjects, because of their structures, do not focus in the themes the way they should. There were contradictions between the different voices of the subject participants and the analyzed materials. This way, it is necessary a constant curricular updating so that the necessary changes are guaranteed for the teachers’ formation according to the educational process. It is necessary that the teachers are always improving their knowledge in the social issues which involve the school, considering that many of them are not graduated in Education. In some cases, many of them graduated from Bachelor Degree and then, after taking a Master or Doctorate Course, they started working in the Superior Educational System. It is suggested that the Superior Education Institutions are touched in the sense of offering in their Post- graduation Courses possibilities of researches on the importance, meaning and implications of the Contemporary Social Themes in Education. We also propose that the institutions improve their Extension Courses in order to give the academicians the chance of interacting with the local problems, related to the Contemporary Social Themes, for the acting and critical thinking of the subject people in the confronting and the search for the solutions for the problems. We also suggest the institutions offer lectures, courses, seminars, symposiums, and other events which give the participants the opportunity of discussing and reflecting about present problems which have an effect in the school system.
